Adair County is steeped in history, having been named in honor of the Adair family, esteemed members of the Cherokee tribe. Some sources suggest that Watt Adair, one of the first Cherokees to settle in the area, was the county's namesake. Established in 1906 from the Goingsnake and Flint districts of the Cherokee Nation, Adair County's origins reveal a fascinating tapestry of stories and struggles, including a decade-long battle between Stilwell and Westville to determine the county seat. In 1910, Stilwell emerged victorious, partly due to its strategic location at the crossroads of two major railroads: the Kansas City Southern Railway and the St. Louis – San Francisco Railway.
Adair County's verdant landscape and fertile soil have fostered a thriving agricultural tradition, with strawberries emerging as a major crop during the Great Depression and World War II. Celebrating this rich agricultural heritage, the first Stilwell Strawberry Festival was organized in 1948. The Adair County Courthouse, situated in the heart of Stilwell, Oklahoma, serves as the focal point of county government and stands as an architectural gem and a testament to the region's rich history. This impressive structure, which is the fourth courthouse to grace Stilwell, has a fascinating story that makes it a must-visit destination for history buffs and architecture enthusiasts alike.
The journey to the present courthouse began in 1902, with a two-story wood-frame schoolhouse serving as the initial courthouse until 1908. A new brick building was then constructed, which remained in use until 1920 when a native stone building took its place. Unfortunately, this stone structure burned down on December 30, 1929. Rising from the ashes, the current classically inspired, art deco building was completed in 1930 on the same site.
Designed by J. J. Harrelson and constructed from limestone, steel, and concrete, the Adair County Courthouse boasts striking architectural details that captivate visitors. One of the most notable features is the cornice adorned with molded bas-relief figures of American Indians in full headdress, paying homage to the region's cultural heritage. The building's unique design and historical significance earned it a spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984.
In 1992, the courthouse lawn was further enhanced with the dedication of a marble war memorial, which proudly displays the names of all Adair County residents who made the ultimate sacrifice in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War.
